Grace & Faith 4 U ran my Star Wars themed devotion on May 4, 2016 (Star Wars Day) this year. You can find it HERE or read it below…

A long time ago, in Galilee far, far away…

May the 4th is typically referred to as Star Wars day; May the 4th be with you. This is a play on words from the film franchise Star Wars and the body of warriors who defend goodness called the Jedi Knights who wish each other well by saying, “May the Force be with you.”

The Force in the movies is an energy field that is in everyone, is everywhere, and “binds the galaxy together.” The Jedi do things with the Force, actively pushing things away, making fantastic jumps, and shooting surges of lightning at their foes. To learn these things, Jedi Knights are taken to the Jedi Temple at a very early age to begin their training as Padawan Learner and later to become Jedi themselves.

For Christians, we have something akin to “the Force” in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God’s messenger here on Earth, His Comforter, and His Councilor for us as His children. We, like the Jedi, can learn to rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance in almost any situation through study of His word in the Bible. While we cannot, and should not, expect the Holy Spirit to enable us to do the things shown in the movies, I do think we should feel a similar power move through us when we are open to the Spirit in our lives.

The original Star Wars movie released 39 years ago this May 25th eventually was subtitled A New Hope (it didn’t have that subtitle on original theatrical release). Just as this title embodied the hope that is within the story of that movie, so too can we take A New Hope from scripture when we read it following the leadings of our Force, the Holy Spirit. It is my hope that each time you go to open your Bible you will actively, and consciously, invite the Holy Spirit into your heart so that He may reinvigorate your reading and understanding. If we could get all of Christendom to do that then we might truly mimic the subtitle of the newest release in the Star Wars franchise too as we cause the Holy Spirit to Awaken within us.

May the force…of the Holy Spirit…be with you, always.
